Healthcare Databases

You can search the healthcare databases for a vast range of clinical and health management information.  You will find journal citations often with abstracts and in some cases full text articles.

Which databases can I access?

  • AMED - Allied health and complimentary medicine.
  • BNI - British Nursing Index, Nursing, midwifery, healthvisitors.
  • CINAHL - Nursing and allied health.
  • EMBASE - Drugs and pharmacology, other aspects of medicine.
  • Health Business Elite - Healthcare administration, institution management.
  • HMIC - Information from the King's Fund and Department of Health.
  • Medline - Largest database, medicine and nursing.
  • PsycINFO - Psychology and allied fields.

Do I need usernames and passwords?  Yes, you will need an OpenAthens username and password.  You can register here.  If you register from an NHS net computer your account will be ready to use straight away, otherwise there may be a delay, while your account is checked.

Can I access them from my office / home?  Yes, your OpenAthens password will work from any internet connection.

I'm not sure where to start..  Please contact us, we offer one:one and small group training to help you get the most out of the databases and find the information you need.  You can also take a look at the following online tutorials created by NICE
